Research Assistant in Bioinformatics(2017.12.20)

[Overview]

In the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Group at the NIBIOHN, we carry out bioinformatics and computational biology research into drug discovery and development (with special emphasis on data integration, target discovery and ADMET prediction). Our research involves both the analysis of real-life experimental data and the development of novel computational techniques, aiming to establish systems approaches to drug discovery.

[Main activities and responsibilities]

  1. Manage the Group website
  2. Prepare for and engage in outreach activities
  3. Prepare and analyze data using Microsoft Excel
  4. Prepare presentation materials using Microsoft Powerpoint
  5. Prepare reports and other documents for funding agencies
  6. Conduct survey research (literature search, data collection, obtaining quotes, and other tasks related to public relations)
  7. (If the candidate possesses the relevant skills) Develop software and/or assist system administration

 

[Qualification requirements]

  1. General IT literacy
  2. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint
  3. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge and experience
  4. Communication skills and the ability to work in a team
  5. A good command of Japanese
  6. (If Responsibility 7 above applies) Experience in software development including machine learning and/or Linux cluster administration

The following will be advantageous:

  • Knowledge of project-related subjects including medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, natural sciences, engineering and computer science
  • Experience (or willingness) to work as a research administrator
  • A good command of English

[Contract Conditions]

The position is full time (or part time, depending on the needs of the candidate) and until the end of March 2019 in the first instance, renewable annually upon evaluation (subject to funding availability). Terms and conditions of appointment will apply, including salary and health insurance, in accordance with NIBIOHN’s standard procedures for appointing research assistants.

[Qualification requirements]

The successful applicant has or will have a PhD degree in a subject relevant to our research, including computational biology (bioinformatics, systems biology), computer science, statistics, pharmacology, chemistry (computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry) and biology (structural biology, molecular and cell biology). At least one of the following conditions must be satisfied: 1) a strong background in software engineering and the ability to develop novel biofinformatic software/databases with new technologies including big data analytics and artificial intelligence, 2) experience in handling clinical and/or large-scale biological data such as those from transcriptomic and proteomic experiments and 3) the ability to analyze small-molecule compounds and their targets using tools in chemoinformatics and computer-aided drug design.

 

A good balance of scientific and interpersonal skills will be essential and willingness to tackle interdisciplinary research questions is advantageous.
